Clicking on picons, specific items in the Resources section, and the video button will all open windows displaying pictures or movies. Windows can be moved around the screen and shuffled from front to back just as you would any other window on your computer. Open windows in Omnipedia can be closed in the traditional manner, by clicking on the close box in the upper left of the title bar over the window. The windows in Omnipedia cannot be resized.
POSITIONING WINDOWS:
Upon starting up the Omnipedia, any windows opened will appear in front of the Omnipedia, tiling from upper left to lower right. The position in which windows will open can be set in three ways:
Method 1: Open a window. Move it to the desired new location. Hold down the shift key and click inside the window, below its title bar. Doing so will tell the Omnipedia that the next window that is opened should appear slightly below and to the right of the window on which you shift-clicked.
Method 2: If you hold down the shift key while closing a window, the next window you open will appear where the last one closed.
Method 3: If you click on a window that is behind other windows, that window will move forward. If you hold down the shift key while doing this, subsequently opened windows will tile down and to the right of the window that was brought forward.
LOCKING WINDOWS:
When you move from one entry to a second in the Omnipedia, all opened windows associated with the first entry will close. If you wish to prevent this from happening, you can click on the lock icon in the upper left of any window. This will tell the Omnipedia to keep the locked window open until it is unlocked or closed by you. This function is only available for windows containing still images, not for those containing video footage.
WINDOWS IN RESOURCES AND TOPICS MODES
Switching into Topics mode will result in automatic closure of all windows, including those that are locked. When you leave the Topics mode, any locked windows that were closed will re-open.
In Resources mode, if you are viewing a text-only entry, all windows will automatically close. Similar to the Topics mode, leaving the text entry will result in the re-opening of those locked windows that had been closed.
LOSING A WINDOW?:
Because windows open in sequence from upper left to lower right, it is remotely possible to click on a picon and open a window such that it appears entirely off of the screen. If this happens, going to another entry will result in closing all unlocked windows, including the one that is off-screen. Then, use the back up button to go to the screen where you had the difficulty, re-set the opening location for windows using the methods listed in POSITIONING WINDOWS above, and re-open the previously problematic window.
